To Define Undefined Barriers: Prologue & Pt.1

Prologue

Two young boys ran outside to play, today they would complete the dare of their lives. Deeper and deeper they ran, until they reached a garden with miles and miles of plants. It was a beautiful sight to see, until their eyes finally landed on a dark area, they had to go there for their dare. It was unlike anything they had ever seen before, and so they walked closer, the older boy leading the way.

“Hey, look at what I found! “It’s a wilted ivy plant just like in father’s nature books,” he exclaimed, reaching over to touch it. The younger one stood back excitedly, waiting his turn for the dare. “It’s too bad, even father won’t be able to save this poor plant. How about you go in and say goodbye to it?” asked the older boy. The little one nodded, skipping his way to the ivy. “Bye-bye wittle pwant, me wove yo-'' he stopped mid-sentence, and collapsed to the floor, his eyes rolling to the back of his head.

He regained his consciousness in a mere 10 seconds and stared intently at the plant. “Hey! What’s taking so long?” yelled the older boy. “It’s nothing, let’s go eat lunch with father.” he replied in a monotonous voice. “You sure you’re okay kid?” “Absolutely, now come on, I’m craving mother’s pot pie. “But she died 10 years ago…”

Part 1

It had been 3000 years since the countries hemmed themselves in with different borders. Everything looked much different, too different in my opinion. It certainly came with benefits though, like Thai communities being so close to Parisian ones. If only our Empire could also move closer to the Seroan Empire, then Mae would practically be next door.

The alarm beeped, shaking me out of my thoughts. It was 6:20am, the time I usually woke up for work. I brushed my teeth, took a hot shower with a fresh pack of Dove, and popped on some cologne I found at the thrift store across the street. The woody fragrance always seemed to get the job done.

My messy bangs fell on my face as I hurriedly tied my shoelaces. “Dad’s going to kill me for coming late to work! Come on Arrow, girl, eat up.” I said, pouring dog food into the bowl. Arrow wagged her round, furry tail, eating up every last bit of food before nuzzling her nose against my foot. “Aww, I love you too girl, but I have to go.” I said, gently nudging her off my foot before closing the door.

As I walked down the staircase, I stopped mid step, startled by the sudden vibration of my phone. It was Dad. “Eros! What’s taking so long? I need you to hurry up with the files. Where’s your sense of work ethic?” Dad asked. I managed to mutter a quick ‘sorry’ and dashed to work in my Honda Civic.

I entered the office expecting the worst from my dad. “Hey dad, I’ll get to my desk now.” I said to him. “There you are, son. I’ve been wanting to give something to you.” he said, handing me a plane ticket. I couldn’t fathom what just happened, I stared blankly at him.

“Are you sure, you’re my father?” I asked. “What do you mean? Just take the ticket before I change my mind” he sighed. “A ride to Thailand? Thank you, you have no idea how much this means to me!” I exclaimed while hugging him. I stared into the glorious pink-orange sky from the windows, smiling like a little kid seeing his mom after school.
